Why Trust Is Collapsing, and What Professionals Must Do

Watch: AI Is Killing Trust: 3 Proven Strategies to Rebuild Human Confidence

AI has made it easier than ever to create content. It has also created a real problem: people don't know who to trust anymore.

This affects everyone, but especially business owners, advisers and professionals. Even the honest operators are being doubted, simply because the internet is flooded with content that all looks and sounds the same.

In the last while I've had conversations with brokers, accountants, lawyers and property managers who all said a version of the same thing:

"I'm producing content, but I don't feel more trusted." "My content is good, but it doesn't feel human enough." "Clients like AI, but they still want me."

That tension matters. If we don't address it properly, we end up working harder while the thing that actually drives sales, trust, erodes quietly in the background.

Why trust is collapsing faster than people realise

When everyone can produce polished content in seconds, polished stops being a signal. The bar that used to separate a serious professional from an amateur, a clean article, a decent post, a tidy email, is now available to anyone for free. So the audience adjusts. They stop trusting the surface, because the surface is easy to fake.

The result is a strange inversion. The more content floods in, the less any single piece is believed. Your prospects are quietly asking a new question about everything they read: is there a real person behind this, or is this just more noise? Most content now fails that test, and it drags the honest operators down with it.

The shift that separates trusted experts from AI noise

The professionals who stay trusted aren't the ones avoiding AI. They're the ones using AI behind the scenes while keeping themselves firmly in front. AI drafts, researches and speeds things up in the background. The judgment, the point of view and the face stay human.

That's the shift. Trust doesn't come from the volume of content you produce. It comes from evidence that a real, experienced person stands behind it, and is willing to be seen doing so.

How to show up in a way people recognise as genuine

The fastest way to signal you're real is to do the things AI can't fake for you. Show your face and use your own voice. Tell specific stories from your actual work, the ones with real names, real numbers and the bits that didn't go to plan. Take a clear position instead of hedging. Say the thing a generic post never would, because it carries your judgment and your reputation with it.

None of this is about producing more. It's about being unmistakably you in what you do produce.

The channels that rebuild trust the fastest

Trust rebuilds fastest wherever people can see and hear the actual human. Video is the obvious one, because it's very hard to fake presence and personality on camera. Speaking and in-person events are stronger again, which is exactly why I'm doubling down on live rooms even when the topic is AI. And on the written channels, the posts that land are the ones that clearly could only have come from you.

The common thread is presence. Pick the channels that let the real you come through, and be consistent on them.

Why a small change in how you show up has an outsized impact

Because trust is scarce right now, the professionals who are visibly, recognisably human stand out more than they used to. When most content is anonymous noise, a small, consistent signal of a real expert carries disproportionate weight. You don't need to produce more than everyone else. You need to be more obviously yourself than everyone else, and to keep showing up that way.

If trust is part of your business, and it is, that's the thing to prioritise next. I unpack this further in a short video below.

Frequently asked questions

Why is trust collapsing in an AI-driven content world?

Because AI has made polished content free and instant, polish is no longer a signal of credibility. Audiences respond by trusting the surface less, which drags even honest, expert operators down with the noise.

Does using AI make me less trustworthy?

Not if you use it behind the scenes. The trusted professionals use AI to draft, research and speed things up, while keeping their own judgment, voice and face out front. Trust erodes when the human disappears, not when AI is involved.

How do professionals rebuild trust online?

By doing the things AI can't fake for you: showing your face and voice, telling specific real stories, taking a clear position, and being consistent on the channels where people can see the actual human, especially video, speaking and in-person events.

Which channels rebuild trust the fastest?

The ones where presence is hard to fake. Video, live speaking and in-person events are strongest, and written posts work when they could only have come from you. The common thread is a visible, recognisable human.

Why does a small change in how I show up matter so much?

Because trust is scarce. When most content is anonymous noise, a consistent signal that a real expert stands behind the work carries disproportionate weight. You don't need more volume, you need to be more obviously yourself.
